No better place to be!

Welcome back Falcons! We are looking forward to another great year!

Our staff has been busy this summer attending workshops, conferences and preparing their curriculum for another great year at South Whidbey H.S./Academy.

NEW CERTIFICATED STAFF:  Please welcome four new certificated staff members to our team.

Don Wills who taught at S.W.M.S. last year will be teaching C.T.E.(Shop) and P.E. at South Whidbey H.S.   Don will be returning to S.W.H.S. after several years

Maddie Pinkerton, who was Mr. Ballog’s student teacher last year, will be our new A.P. Biology and General Biology teacher.   Maddie recently completed her Master’s degree after earning a degree in Biology from Gonzaga University.   Maddie spent her summer in training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer research center and also went through Advanced Placement training for teachers.

Helene Zawila will be our new Art teacher.  Helene is a very talented artist who has recently taught Art at an international school in Saudi Arabia.   She’s has several years’ experience in teaching I.B. and A.P. Art at the H.S. level.

Tyler Hehn is a South Whidbey H.S. graduate!  Tyler will be teaching Special Education for us this year after teaching at Monroe H.S. for the past seven years.  Welcome home!

***We may also have new classified staff members but assignments have yet to be finalized.

EQUITY:  Along with 14 other district staff members, I’ve recently completed at 40-hour equity training facilitated by Dr. Caprice Hollis. The training taught how to better understand racism, the impact of stereotypes and awareness of institutional privilege in our schools and society.  Participants also learned how to facilitate this training so that they can train their specific school’s staff.

One of the outcomes for this training will be to develop equity teams within our schools and district.  The purpose of our Equity teams is to increase cultural competence of all staff, have significant improvement in policies, procedures, decision making processes, use of resources, community engagement and other specific school goals around cultural competency for staff and students.

The primary goal of Equity Teams is to promote institutional change within our school to better serve our community.

Please remember to get involved. Consider joining the PTSA, Performing Arts Booster or Athletic Booster Club. These groups raise funds that directly support our students in academics and extracurricular activities. The opportunities and enhancements that these groups provide make SWHS a special place. Do you have a special expertise or talent that you can share with our students? Just ask and we can get you involved. Please contact John Patton, at (360) 221–6808, ext. 5406, or jpatton@sw.wednet.edu, if you have any questions.
