No better place to be!

We are ready to begin another great school year!

Welcome back!  Our staff is looking forward to another great school year at South Whidbey H.S.  and South Whidbey Academy.  Many of our staff attended various trainings this summer in preparation for our new school year.  We have a dedicated staff that I often catch in the summer in their classroom preparing for the year.

Please welcome four certificated staff members who’ve previously worked our district but now have different roles at our school.  Kayla Phillips is moving from the middle school to become our Activities Director and Leadership Teacher.  We are pleased that Vicki Cable will remain with us teaching math but now in a full time role.  Kristen Nelson was a leaver replacement teacher last year and we are happy to have her this year in a fulltime role teaching English and History.  Finally, Luke Hodson, who taught Special Education at the Elementary last year, will be teaching Special Education with us.

I am happy to announce that we will be adopting the “Character Strong” advisory curriculum this school year.  Every Wednesday all students will have a twenty five minute Advisory Period.  This period will be used for the Character Strong Curriculum, club/ASB meetings, assemblies, registration, remediation, etc.  The main component of advisories will be the Character Strong Curriculum.

The following is from the Character Strong Curriculum.  Please feel free to refer to the website below for more information.

More Than A Curriculum –It's A Culture

The research shows that when a school takes time to cultivate a culture of character and develop social-emotional skills, grades go up and bad behavior goes down. It makes sense - when kids feel safe and supported, they perform better and want to be there. When students learn the value of kindness, service, and empathy, they don't just walk out of school being competent at math and science - they walk away being capable, compassionate people.

What Is CharacterStrong?

CharacterStrong is an organization that provides curricula and trainings for schools internationally. Our trainings help educators infuse character and social-emotional learning into the daily fabric of any classroom or campus. Our curricula focus on character development in order to help students cultivate social-emotional skills, their emotional intelligence, and help them develop a stronger identity and purpose in school and in

Please remember to get involved.  Consider joining the PTSA, Performing Arts Booster or Athletic Booster Club.  These groups raise funds that directly support our students in academics and extracurricular activities.  The opportunities and enhancements that these groups provide make SWHS a special place.  Do you have a special expertise or talent that you can share with our students?  Just ask and we can get you involved.  Please contact John Patton, at (360) 221–6808, ext. 5406, or jpatton@sw.wednet.edu, if you have any questions.
